India’s Readiness to Manage Respiratory Illnesses
The Union Health Ministry has assured the public that India is prepared to handle respiratory illnesses effectively. Surveillance data indicates no unusual surge in cases across the country.
To monitor the global situation, the ministry convened its Joint Monitoring Group on Saturday. This meeting addressed recent reports of rising respiratory illnesses in China. Following this, officials sought updates from the World Health Organization (WHO) to stay informed about evolving developments.
A senior official emphasized that India’s readiness includes continuous monitoring and proactive measures. The official noted that China’s rise in cases aligns with the flu season and involves common pathogens like influenza, RSV, and HMPV.
What is HMPV?
HMPV is a virus that affects the respiratory tract and spreads through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms typically include:
- Cough
- Fever
- Nasal congestion
- Shortness of breath
Although it was discovered in 2001, HMPV is now recognized as a major cause of infections in both upper and lower respiratory tracts. The virus primarily affects children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immunity. Studies reveal that 90% of children contract HMPV by the age of five.

Recognizing Symptoms and Preventing Spread
Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, highlighted that HMPV induces flu-like symptoms, especially in infants and the elderly. He recommended simple preventive measures such as:
- Avoiding close contact with individuals showing cold or flu symptoms
- Practicing good respiratory hygiene, like covering your mouth while coughing
- Taking over-the-counter medications to alleviate mild symptoms
Dr. Goel stressed, “By adhering to basic precautions, people can manage symptoms and reduce the spread of the virus.”
Proactive Measures in Place
The health ministry has confirmed that HMPV circulates globally, including in India. However, data from ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) shows no significant rise in cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI).
To ensure readiness, a recent nationwide drill confirmed that India is equipped to manage surges in respiratory illnesses. Surveillance systems remain operational, and public health interventions are ready for deployment if needed.
In parallel, WHO continues to provide updates on the situation in China to support global management strategies.
